A lifetime of work leaves many people, in later life, with significant savings, pensions, and investments. It is wealth that has taken decades to build, and it makes retirees and older adults one of the most attractive targets for online fraud.
The reason is simple. These are sums a criminal would rarely find in a younger person's account, yet they sit without the security teams, controls, and defences that protect a business holding the same amount. Add to that fraud that is now more sophisticated than ever, using AI-generated voices, spoofed numbers, and messages built to feel personal and urgent.
This talk is for older people who want to feel confident online, and for the families who help look after them. Callum plainly sets out how modern cyber fraud works and why it succeeds, using jargon-free language so you leave better able to protect yourself or someone you love.
Callum will work through:
• The main scams and how they work: From bank and delivery texts to romance and investment fraud, the fake calls claiming to be your bank or a family member, and the newer tricks using AI-generated voices and messages.
• Why they catch people out: The pressure, urgency, and emotional pull that fraud relies on, and the tactics designed to bypass even careful, experienced judgement.
• What actually protects you: The practical settings, habits, and simple checks that stop most fraud in its tracks, across your phone, computer, banking, and social media.
• When something has gone wrong: The steps to take quickly if you or a loved one has been caught out, who to contact, and how to recover.
The talk lasts around 45 to 60 minutes, with time afterwards for questions and discussion.
About Callum
Callum is the Founder and Director of Lomond Cyber, with over ten years' experience in cyber security and digital safeguarding across government, the military, and academia.
His career began researching how extremist groups target and radicalise people online, and he went on to work as a cyber security professional in the UK Cabinet Office on national programmes, from election security to critical national infrastructure. He founded Lomond Cyber to give families structured cyber security guidance and support, protecting every generation, from children on their first devices to older people protecting a lifetime's wealth.
Callum holds an MSc in Software and Systems Security from the University of Oxford and further degrees from Sciences Po Paris and King's College London. He also works with family offices and family businesses on protecting themselves in today's complex digital world.
